Dunedin Airport in New Zealand‘s south island has been placed in lockdown amid fears of a ‘suspicious package’.
The airport was evacuated at about 8.10pm Sunday local time, with the surrounding area quickly cordoned off.
New Zealand Police confirmed they are on the scene and the bomb squad is reportedly en route.
‘Police are at the scene and specialist teams have been deployed to determine the nature of the package,’ a statement reads.
A source from within the airport told the Otago Daily Times an abandoned bag was found in a building outside the airport’s main terminal.
At least one flight has already been disrupted, with an Air New Zealand flight from Wellington diverted.
New Zealand’s terror threat was elevated from low to high on Friday following the alleged attack on two mosques in Christchurch.
